Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 70, originally published in August 2012.

We progress through this life often believing that our experiences define who we are and how we respond to situations. We may believe we are essentially good, but have negative and self-defeating beliefs about ourselves that we perceive as truth based on previous experiences. Jason Hartman interviews life coach, Laurie Gerber of Handel Group, about eliminating these falsehoods through personal integrity to overcome whatever is blocking a person from success. Laurie explains her five steps to personal integrity, using having more money as an example.

  • Change your mind
  • Find your role model
  • Make your plan
  • Keep promises and keep track
  • Dare to do business

Laurie also talks about the “chicken” and the “brat” in each of us. We can make every excuse in the book for not pursuing and following through with our dreams. They sound legitimate in our heads, but if we’re honest with ourselves, they are just excuses that prevent us from realizing our goals. The Handel Group Life Coaching teaches many different exercises, beginning with what Laurie calls dream statements and moving into purging all negativity surrounding those statements. Obtaining personal integrity is empowering and she encourages people to use this power to change the world for the better. Laurie Gerber is President of Handel Group Life Coaching (HGLC) and an expert life coach herself. Passionate about personal development, Laurie has been coaching individuals and groups for 15 years. Before enthusiastically joining The Handel Group, Laurie owned and operated Partners with Parents, a tutoring and educational consulting business in New York City. Laurie oversees 16 coaches in their work with clients on improving all areas of life. She considers herself “an angel recruiter” because she is busy looking for other people who share her mission to instill more joy and peace in the world. “When all people are living true to their ideals, then I can rest,” she says. She doesn’t anticipate being able to rest anytime soon.

For the majority of her adult life, Laurie has been teaching and coaching adults and children in a variety of settings including lectures, discussion groups, seminars, classroom teaching, tutoring and one-on-one coaching. Laurie holds a degree in Education and Political Science from Swarthmore College, along with her teaching certification. She leads large groups at Kripalu Center, Esalen Institute, Equinox Fitness, Soho House, the JCC of Manhattan and Natural Health Magazine’s Women’s Wellness Weekends. She regularly blogs for The Daily Love, Huffington Post, Crazy Sexy Wellness, Dr. Frank Lipman, HGLC’s own weekly newsletter and more. Laurie's rigorous yet loving coaching style was recently showcased in MTV's True Life Special "I'm Getting A Second Chance." In April 2012, she launched “Wake Up Your Week,” an on-going subscription to weekly live teleseminars. Laurie feels blessed to spend her days (and most nights) doing work that makes her proud and she is inspired by HGLC clients for having the guts to look at themselves honestly.

As the face of business evolves, more small and medium businesses are outsourcing work to remote employees or independent contractors versus maintaining the brick and mortar offices with onsite employees. The advances in technology have made it possible to find employees and contractors around the world. But what kinds of work should be done remotely, what can be effectively outsourced overseas or should be U.S. based, and how does an employer keep workers accountable? Jason Hartman visits with Leadership IQ founder and CEO, Mark Murphy, about these questions.

Mark explains outcome-based management techniques, such as deadlines for projects, technologies to monitor employees, and various instant messaging programs to check in. Mark encourages outcome-based work accountability over technological monitoring to build a healthy relationship and accountability with workers. Mark also discusses screening and hiring from the remote workforce, describing the personality types that work best remotely. Additionally, he shares the importance of good leadership, stressing that leaders need to be much more explicit and transparent, and have clear expectations with a clear “why.” One of the major sources of remote employee dissatisfaction is feeling left out of the loop.

Mark Murphy is the founder and CEO of Leadership IQ.  He leads one of the world’s largest studies on goal-setting and leadership, and his groundbreaking research has been featured in Fortune, Forbes, Businessweek, U.S. News & World Report, the Washington Post, and hundreds more periodicals.  Mark has appeared on CBS News Sunday Morning, ABC’s 20/20, Fox Business News, and other top broadcasts. Mark has lectured at the Harvard Business School, Yale University, the University of Rochester, and the University of Florida.

And his clients include Microsoft, IBM, MasterCard, Merck, MD Anderson Cancer Center, FirstEnergy, Volkswagen and Johns Hopkins. Author of the new book Hiring for Attitude (McGraw-Hill; Dec. 9, 2011), Mark has also written the international bestseller Hundred Percenters: Challenge Your People to Give It Their All and They’ll Give You Even More, as well as Hard Goals, The Deadly Sins of Employee Retention, and Generation Y and the New Rules of Management. Among his many honors, Mark was a three-time nominee for Modern Healthcare’s “Most Powerful People in Healthcare Award,” joining a list of 300 luminaries including Hillary Clinton and Bill Frist -- among only 15 consultants ever to be nominated to this list. He was also awarded the prestigious Healthcare Financial Management Association’s “Helen Yerger Award for Best Research” for being the first person to discover the link between patient mortality rates and hospital finances.  Some of his other well-known research studies include “Are SMART Goals Dumb?,” “Why CEO's Get Fired,” “Why New Hires Fail” and “Don’t Expect Layoff Survivors to Be Grateful.”

Previously, Mark was President of a joint venture with Mercer Human Resources Consulting.  Prior to that he was a partner in the management consulting subsidiary of VHA, Inc., the world’s largest healthcare consortium.  He holds degrees from the University of Buffalo, executive coursework at The Wharton School and an MBA from the University of Rochester.  He lives in Atlanta and Washington, DC.

Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 55, originally published in July 2012.

Shawn Andrich, host of Gamers with Jobs Podcast, began podcasting before iTunes existed, when podcasts were only MP3s available on websites. Jason Hartman and Shawn walk through the changes in podcasting and talk about the current format of the show. They discuss the conversation of the show, which has four hosts and covers a range of topics related to gaming and gamers. One of the techniques Shawn and his other hosts use is video in order to signal one another so as not to talk over one another, producing an almost edit-free podcast. Shawn also explains they use Google+, using Google Hangouts, something less often used by podcasters, and how each host records their own audio track, which is then spliced together by the audio technician. He feels it is the best audio quality when hosts are in different locations. Other topics Jason and Shawn cover includes advertising, going into detail about why advertisers don’t like to advertise on podcasts, and donation drives that work very well to draw community support. They wrap up the interview with great advice on producing a successful podcast.

Gamers With Jobs is the brainchild of Shawn Andrich and Sean Sands, both gamers who, oddly enough, didn’t have “real” jobs when they launched the site years ago. It began as a news site with a forum, and evolved into what you see today: a safe haven for all the girls and guys who grew up with games and have families to feed and bills to pay. Seeing that news wasn’t really getting the job done, Gamers With Jobs became the premier independent editorial site and community you see today. A cornerstone of the site, the Gamers With Jobs Conference Call prides itself on a professional-quality production that rivals that of many commercially produced podcasts. Featuring some of the very same writers from the front page, the podcast brings you smart, in-depth discussion about the latest games, issues and design quandaries of the day. We are also very fortunate to have regular guests like Ken Levine, Jeff Green, Shawn Elliott, Soren Johnson, John Carmack and others on the show. The host of the show, Shawn has been working on gaming websites for over a decade. Before the Conference Call, he was co-host on the GWJ Radio podcast and the short-lived Escapist Radio show. He plays games on every platform and in nearly every genre. His loathing for WoW and what it has done to otherwise interesting people is legendary.

Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 61, originally published in June of 2012.

Jason Hartman interviews author, Scott Fritz, who shares his story that became his book, The 40 Hour Work YEAR, about how he became a passive investor in his business instead of entrenched in working on and in his business.

Running and growing a business requires a lot of dedication, passion, and often an incredible chunk of one’s life. Many business owners find themselves working 80 or more hours per week, with little to no time to enjoy the benefits of their success. But with a change in mindset and armed with a few good tools, one can enjoy life again and still have a sound, successful business.

Scott explains how the right systems and key people create a smooth business structure. “When you get a group of people who are focused on the company’s success first and then focused on how they can be a part of making that happen, it is amazing. I call it my decision filter,” says Scott. He defines the decision filter as company first, owner second, and employees third, going further into detail about what each of those factors mean. He has found that putting all decisions through that filter makes it easier to make good decisions.

Scott Fritz is an Entrepreneur, Business Coach, Angel Investor and Author. In March of 2008 he founded Growth Connect – growthconnect.com. By leveraging and combining the services of business coaching, advisory board development and angel investment resources, Growth Connect specializes in the hyper growth entrepreneur and business owner. Mr. Fritz founded his previous company, Human Capital in 1997. Through persistent passion and focus, Scott grew his company into a nationwide player with 2007 annual revenues of $170 million dollars. This hyper growth landed Human Capital and its affiliate division on the INC. 500 list in 2003 and 2004 with growth rates in excess of 1,000 percent. Servicing 350 client companies and 5,000 employees in over 40 states, Human Capital was sold to a nationwide staffing firm in December of 2007. As an active Angel investor, Mr. Fritz has invested in multiple ventures over the past ten years.

Some areas of investment include: land development, environmental services, business services, technology and entertainment. His involvement with these companies ranges from passive investor and advisory board member to paid coach and consultant. Scott enjoys sharing his experiences in growing companies, coaching budding entrepreneurs, and developing strategic plans for each of his endeavors. One of his recent investments sold for $70 million dollars within three years of his initial funding, equaling well over a 300% return on investment. Mr. Fritz resides in Las Vegas, and is the Past President of the local Entrepreneur’s Organization (EO) Chapter. Scott has held various volunteer positions within EO over the past ten years including Global Chapter Development Committee Chair, Regional Director and Area Director. Mr. Fritz is also an EO Certified Strategy Summit and Accelerator Facilitator. This role enables him to coach the “leaders of leaders” and improve the focus and alignment of EO Chapter Boards and Accelerator programs throughout the United States and Canada. Since 2005 Scott has facilitated over one hundred individual strategic sessions and coaching programs.

Today's Flash Back Friday takes us to Episode 67 from July 2012.

Join Jason Hartman for an insightful conversation on creativity with author and Executive Director for Stanford Technology Ventures Program, Tina Seelig. Tina points out that many people incorrectly believe they lack creativity and that it cannot be learned. She views this as a huge problem in that it is a matter of attitude. “If you think about it, every single sentence that you utter is a creative act,” Tina explained. “From the moment you’re born, you’re creating your life.” Creativity is not exclusive to artists or musicians.

Problem-solving at all levels requires creativity, whether it’s fixing a meal or designing machinery or coming up with an efficient technique. It is incredibly important to every aspect of life. Tina gives examples of how to encourage and expand creativity, as well as examples of how it is often stifled. Some of the tools for bringing out creativity are reframing, connecting and combining ideas, and challenging assumptions. Tina explains our “innovation engine,” a tool we all possess. There are three things people need to possess as an individual and three things that are critical in the outside world. As an individual, we need basic knowledge, imagination and motivation. We are affected by our environment by resources, habitat and culture.

Dr. Tina Seelig is the Executive Director for the Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP), the entrepreneurship center at Stanford University's School of Engineering. STVP is dedicated to accelerating high-technology entrepreneurship education and creating scholarly research on technology-based firms. STVP provides students from all majors with the entrepreneurial skills needed to use innovations to solve major world problems. She teaches courses on creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship in the department of Management Science and Engineering, and within the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford. Dr. Seelig is also the Director of the National Center for Engineering Pathways to Innovation (Epicenter), which is dedicated infusing entrepreneurship and innovation skills into undergraduate engineering in the United States. Funded by the National Science Foundation and directed by STVP, the Epicenter is an education, research and outreach hub for the creation and sharing of entrepreneurship and innovation resources among U.S. engineering schools.

Dr. Seelig has also written 16 popular science books and educational games. Her books include The Epicurean Laboratory and Incredible Edible Science, published by Scientific American; and a series of twelve games called Games for Your Brain, published by Chronicle Books. Her newest books, published by HarperCollins are What I Wish I Knew When I Was 20: A Crash Course on Making Your Place in the World (2009), and inGenius: Unleashing Creative Potential, which will be released in April 2012.

She has a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Stanford and is the Executive Director of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program, which is the entrepreneurship center at Stanford University School of Engineering. Seelig also teaches a course in the Department of Management Science & Engineering on Creativity and Innovation. In 2009, Seelig was awarded the highly prestigious Gordon Prize for her innovative work in technology, engineering, and education.
